  1. Made outstanding contributions to Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Information Technology (IT) research; Advanced the discipline of Cloud computing and distributed systems with high distinction.
  2. Co-authored over 600 publications, which include 220 journal papers, 245 conference papers, 65 book chapters, 6 textbooks, and 9 edited research books.
  3. H-index is 117 and my papers have received over 71,000 citations (ref: Google Scholar).
  4. Five recent conference papers received Best Paper Awards. Two  journal papers received 2009 Outstanding Paper Award from IEEE Communications Society, USA and 2017 Best Paper Award from Elsevier.
  5. Successful in obtaining over 35 competitive research grants (includes: 18 from Australian Research Council (ARC) and 7 from companies such as Microsoft and IBM) with colleagues for over $52 million.
  6. Delivered 72 keynotes at international conferences (held in USA, Canada, Australia, Europe, China, India, Brazil, etc.) .He received Chris Wallace Outstanding Researcher Award in 2008 from CORE, Australasia.
  7. Received the 2009 IEEE Medal for Excellence in Scalable Computing from IEEE Computer Society TCSC.
  8. Founded the CLOUDS Laboratory, a research group in Distributed and Cloud Computing and have been serving as its Director.
  9. Successfully graduated 34 PhD students since 2006. They are now working at top IT companies including Google, IBM, Microsoft, Telstra, and Amazon.
  10. Elected as a Fellow of IEEE (2015) and was recognized as "Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher" in 2016 and 2017.


Teaching and Curriculum Development:

  1. His vision and leadership in mounting the world's first Masters course in Distributed Computing is internationally recognized -- IEEE published articles on the program and Microsoft sponsored $40K for creating a new teaching lab.
  2. Innovations he introduced in teaching and research training programs have significantly enhanced the learning experience of Melbourne students and impacted on others internationally.
  3. He has offered significant academic leadership and strategic direction for setting up new research programs, development of advanced curriculum, and knowledge transfer and engagements in distributed computing field. I conceived, developed and directed the postgraduate program, Master of Engineering in Distributed Computing (MEDC) from 2005 to 2012. I took major responsibility in promoting and attracting Australian and international students. From 2011, it is offered as Master of Information Technology (MIT) in Distributed Computing and attracts 100+ students each year.

Knowledge Transfer and Engagements:


  1. Software technologies developed by his team are in use at many academic institutions and commercial enterprises in over 40 countries around the world, including IBM, HP Labs, Ericsson, Xerox PARC, and Fujitsu.
  2. His work is regularly featured in national and international press/media outlets, which include: The Age, ZDNet, The Hindu, The Australian, Deccan Herald, MIT Technology Review, Nikkei Japan, and Red Herring.
  3. Aneka Cloud technology, commercialized by his spin-off company, Manjrasoft, received the 2010 Frost New Product Innovation Award and the 2011 Telstra Innovation Challenge Award.



Community Services:


  1. He founded five IEEE/ACM international conferences including CCGrid, Cluster, and e-Science.
  2. He co-founded the IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing and served as the first elected Chair, 2005-2007.
  3. The President of the IEEE Computer Society, USA has recognised his dedicated services to IEEE and computing community by presenting him with the Distinguished Service Award in 2008.
  4. He served as the founding Editor-In-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing during 2012-2015He is currently serving as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Software: Practice and Experience (Wiley Press) since June 2014.
